This text was required reading for my first term in an 18 month Sonography program. I found it to be comparable to other texts with a couple of annoying issues. First, the author / publisher was LAZY when creating the Table of Contents. Because most Intro to Sonography courses aren't built specifically for this text, the topics jump around. Had the book listed subheadings to each of the nine chapters listed in the contents, it would have been less frustrating and made the text more efficient for the majority of intro courses. Also, the ad nauseam history of sound/ultrasound could have been more brief, or at least a table or representation given to summarize the major historical developments significant to the field of Sonography rather than the single table summarizing milestones in the study of sound from 500 bc to 1883 ad.

Description: This is a good, basic introduction to sonography that provides valuable information on the history of ultrasound, studying, note taking and listening skills, terminology, and simple relevant phrases in Spanish. It stresses the importance of ergonomics, assessing the patient, safety, basic ultrasound protocols and procedures, legal issues in ultrasound, and the various job opportunities for sonographers.
Purpose: "This book provides the much-needed basic knowledge that often gets overlooked in the education of sonographers, letting brand new students in on various scenarios that really happen in the ultrasound world. "
Audience: Although geared for beginning ultrasound students, this book will help sonographers early in their careers as well. It is definitely a useful tool that will help students succeed in class as well as in clinical rotations.
Features: This edition includes discussions of new instrumentation, types of exams, current protocols, and updated CPR and HIPAA guidelines, along with valuable patient care information and updated illustrations. Chapters begin with key terms and objectives and discuss learning styles, test taking ideas, and different thinking skills. The book explains ergonomics and the various scanning injuries, as well as legal and ethical issues. It also provides job-seeking resources as well as teaching resources.
Assessment: In this ever-changing field, this new and improved edition provides entry-level sonography students a broad, fresh approach to what goes on, everyday, in ultrasound. It gives them the necessary tools to provide patients with the best possible care with both compassion and respect.
