This is a good book for someone wanting to further understand fire fighting operations. The main gripe I have with this text is the dramatic approach it has to some issues. For example it labels high rise buildings and stadiums as extreme fire hazards. Modern high rises are always sprinkler protected and unless a plane flies into one, it is a pretty safe place to be in the event of a fire. It uses 9/11 as this justification even though there is simply no way any building and its occupants are going to be safe unless the building is built like a modern nuclear reactors which are designed to withstand a plane crash by being constructed with 10ft thick reinforced concrete and no windows. Furthermore, security at airports is far more thorough, that events like 9/11 are far less likely to happen.
In another example it uses the 1985 Bradford stadium fire to justify all stadiums being an extreme fire hazard even though the Bradford stadium was made of timber and at the time of the fire there was a considerable amount of rubbish underneath which had openings between the timber construction and the pile of rubbish below. Modern stadiums are made of concrete, the plastics used have fire retardants, and there are no openings between the seating areas and the ground floor.
If you are happy to ignore the dramatic elements of this book and use it to understand fire fighting tactics, this is a helpful reference.

Of the 6 books I had to read for this last promotional test, this one is probably the better of them. Very informative, easy to read, plenty of charts and diagrams, and good case studies. Facts and information were realistic and down to earth.
