*Starred Review* If Krueger’s publisher had released just one of the scenes in this novel set in the North Woods of Minnesota, the one in which a car spins off an icy road onto the frozen surface of Iron Lake, trapping two young people inside as the ice cracks and water rushes in, the asking price of an entire novel would have been entirely justified. But this is just one of many such scenes of hold-your-breath suspense, heightened by the isolating blizzards of a Minnesota winter and the eerie presence of a stalker. In the thirteenth in Krueger’s series starring Cork O’Connor, the Tamarack County private investigator (and former sheriff) is called in to help find a misanthropic judge’s wife, who has disappeared. That incident is quickly followed by the killing of a woman friend’s dog, with additional evidence indicating that the woman is being stalked. O’Connor is able to trace the incidents to a cold case from more than 20 years before. Complicating matters, O’Connor’s son’s relationship with the embattled woman’s daughter places his son in peril. Because Krueger works in the history of his characters’ relationships in a clear and elegant way, this exceptionally scary suspense story will prove riveting for both newcomers to the series and readers who have followed Cork as he and his family have aged and grown. --Connie Fletcher
Review
“...a winter’s tale that will both break and warm the reader’s heart.... Krueger’s evident empathy for the Ojibwe and their traditions and values blends seamlessly with horrific violence played out against O’Connor’s struggles to heal his family’s wounds—and his own.”

“A pitch-perfect, wonderfully evocative examination of violent loss. In Frank Drum's journey away from the shores of childhood--a journey from which he can never return--we recognize the heartbreaking price of adulthood and it's 'wisdoms.' I loved this book.”

Epub Tamarack County: A Novel
For loyal William Kent Krueger readers, his latest Corcoran O'Connor novel, "Tamarack County", is an outstanding addition to this well written and well crafted series. Cork is a former sheriff turned private investigator in desolated Northern Minnesota where he raises his family, solves crimes, and proudly celebrates his Ojibwe indian background.
Arguably the underpinnings of this fine series is the ongoing relationships Cork maintains with his children and his Ojibwe medicine man mentor, Henry Meloux. In "Tamarack County", Cork and two of his children confront the many faces and consequences of love--love for one another as well as love for a significant other. Cork is dealing with confusing emotions when he becomes increasingly involved with a new character while his current love, Rainy, is on an extended leave. His daughter Anne has left her religious order for some secretive reason and must deal with her internal conflicts as well as a strange woman who comes looking for her. And his son, Stephen, is caught up in his first heavy relationship and dealing with the ramifications of the joy and pain of first love.
Woven within this fine character study is a white knuckle plot filled with suspense powerful enough to keep the pages turning. A series of random acts of violence, the disappearance of a former judge's wife, the killing and maiming of a beloved dog, the near death of his son, eventually point to a twenty year old cold case that resulted in an innocent man being incarcerated--a case in which Cork was the attending sheriff. But the convicted man is still in jail and apparently content being there, so who is stalking the major characters in this past case including Cork and his immediate family?
