Internationally bestselling author Wilbur Smith returns with Vicious Circle--a heart-racing story of family secrets, greed, and revenge.
Hector Cross left behind a career of high risks and warfare when he married his beloved Hazel Bannock. But after his new life is tragically upended, he recognizes the ruthless hand of an old enemy behind the attack.
Determined to fight back, Hector draws together a team of his most loyal friends and fellow warriors to hunt down those who pursue him and his loved ones. For he and Hazel have a child, a precious daughter, whom he will go to the ends of the earth to protect.
Soon, however, Hector learns that the threat comes not just from his old enemies, but also Hazel’s. Brutal figures from her family’s past—thought long gone—are returning, with an agenda so sinister that Hector realizes he is facing a new type of adversary. One whose deadly methods and dark secrets will lead Hector to a series of crimes so shocking that he has no choice but to settle the score.

I found my first Wilbur Smith book 30+ years ago at a school library when my family and I were living just outside Nairobi, Kenya. His books were a great find for a young teenager, new to living in Africa and thoroughly enjoying the adventure. As a result, I and my brothers have kept pace with Mr. Smith since then, eagerly awaiting new installments and adventures for his various fictional dynasties.
It's with real regret that I have to pan Mr. Smith's latest novel. In fact, if I had to do it over again, I would have stopped reading his books after Monsoon in 1999. A "Vicious Circle" is a story full of characters acting in unbelievable (as in not credible and ridiculous) ways, a plethora of unerotic and painfuly detailed sex scenes, and unreal action scenes.
While I highly recommend readers turn to his earliest books for some engaging yarns, please do yourselves a favor and skip this one.

I have enjoyed Mr. Smith's prior novels including the first one in this series. However, I concur with the other 1 star reviews [and that's a generous rating as it should be a <-3>] that this is simply not worth reading and I have returned it for a full refund. I am over 60 and not considered sensative in any respect. Nonetheless, this book offended me as I really did not need the lurid descriptions of everything from incest, to gay relationships, to whatever. I wanted to find some story and did not. What I got was a purported novel allegely written by a professional novelist that failed to do anything other than convince me that buying it was mistake, reading it proof of my willingness to endure, and returning it proof of my common sense. I will not waste time with specifics other than to note that whomever wrote this garbage is in need of serious professional help and a review of his prior works to find his balance. I am simply not able to believe that Mr. Smith actually wrote this alleged book. If he did, he wins and I am never going to waste time with another one. It is proof that pre-ordering books based upon the author is not a good idea some of the time. Perhaps with counseling and appropriate medication, Mr. Smith can return to the land of the normal and start writing something not akin to pornography. I truly hope that occurs.
