Epub The King: The Bowers Files Mass Market
Once again Steven James has written a novel that is not only thrilling, but engaging, powerful, and very interesting. With The King, the latest installment of the Patrick Bowers Files, any preconceptions I had of the book were blown out of the water. I assumed the book would be good, but not as good as it turned out. Every moment I was awake I couldn't wait to crack the book again to find out what would happen next.
The story, as per the norm, follows Patrick Bowers, an agent for the FBI, as he searches for a relentless killer. Richard Basque, the anthropophagous serial killer that has haunted Patrick Bowers for the last thirteen years, is back once more.
As creepy as is sounds, I quite enjoy Basque's character. He's evil, but also really interesting to read about. He's one of those villains that is truly, inexplicably evil without being flat; I really enjoy that in villains.
The King is, from what I can tell, much more laid back in the intensity--or should I say graphicness--compared to the prequel of the series, Opening Moves. While I struggled to get through Opening Moves due to the intense descriptions, and terrible realities, I didn't with The King. I am not saying The King was any less intense, rather, less graphic. As well, it didn't delve into the idea of the killers copying the Modus Operondi of other real life killers.
There are two plotlines within the novel. Each seemingly unconnected at first, but ending completely, flawlessly together! Steven James never ceases to amaze me with the way he can craft such an intense, yet meaningful story!
In every novel I've read by Steven James, I have found myself learning something new. He takes my preconceived notions of law enforcement and shows me the total truth.

I am a giant fan of Steven James' work and have even attended writing classes taught by the author that further outlined his brilliance as a storyteller. The Bowers Files has been a pleasure to read from "The Pawn" through the recent prequel "Opening Moves" and I was more than eager to read The King after pre-ordering months before release. If someone asked me my favorite fiction writer today, it would be Steven James.
I state that to show that it pains me to leave a 4 star review for this book. James seems to be misfiring a little bit in this one and while the overall experience is pleasurable, there were a few moments that left me rolling my eyes as you could clearly see what was going to come next or the build up overshadowed the payoff.
First, the non-spoiler strengths. The interplay between the main characters is fantastic. James is a master of weaving dialogue between his characters and he never once slips in the way Patrick Bowers can jump from point to point his mind but still have a clear path for the reader. The interactions between Patrick and his step-daughter Tessa continue to blossom as it has throughout the series and it provides some hope to parents that kids do listen to you (even if they pretend they don't care at all.)
I give immense props to James for the twist at the opening of the book. It's one that I doubt many people will see coming and it launches the book into great forward motion. The emotional investment you make from the beginning helps keep you turning pages throughout the entire book.
