From the Nordic noir duo who brought you The New York Times bestseller The Boy in the Suitcase comes a chilling new thriller with a mystery seventy-years in the making.Nina. Natasha. Olga. Three women united by one terrifying secret. But only one of them has killed to keep it.
Natasha Doroshenko, a Ukrainian woman who has been convicted of the attempted murder of her Danish fiancé, escapes police custody on her way to an interrogation in Copenhagen's police headquarters. That night, the frozen, tortured body of Michael, the ex-fiancé, is found in a car, and the manhunt for Natasha escalates. It isn't the first time the young Ukrainian woman has lost a partner to violent ends: her first husband was also murdered, three years earlier in Kiev, and in the same manner: tortured to death in a car.
Danish Red Cross nurse Nina Borg has been following Natasha's case for several years now, since Natasha first took refuge at a crisis center where Nina works. Nina, who had tried to help Natasha leave her abusive fiancé more than once, just can't see the young Ukrainian mother as a vicious killer. But in her effort to protect Natasha's daughter and discover the truth, Nina realizes there is much she didn't know about this woman and her past. The mystery has long and bloody roots, going back to a terrible famine that devastated Stalinist Ukraine in 1934, when a ten-year-old girl with the voice of a nightingale sang her family into shallow graves.Direct download links available for Epub Death of a Nightingale

Epub Death of a Nightingale
It is difficult enough to write a book by yourself, and it would seem doubly so with two in the mix. Think about it for a moment, and you will understand what I mean. That is but one element that makes the novels in the Nina Borg series so remarkable. Nina Borg is the creation of authors Lene Kaaberbol and Agnete Friis, and the books that form their canon --- THE BOY IN THE SUITCASE, INVISIBLE MURDER, and now DEATH OF A NIGHTINGALE, newly published in the United States --- are smooth and seamless collaborations from which a complex and prickly character has emerged.
Nina is a Danish Red Cross nurse employed at a clinic at a Danish camp set up to administer to the needs of refugees and illegal immigrants. She is not entirely likable, given to impulsive acts and a single-mindedness that has cost her to lose her marriage and family. All the books thus far provide an unflinching, thousand-yard stare at humanity’s inhumanity, using the mystery genre as a backdrop. And mysteries there are a-plenty in the series, particularly in DEATH OF A NIGHTINGALE.
The primary plot involves a Ukrainian refugee named Natasha Doroshenko and her young daughter, Katerina. While waiting for a determination on her immigration status, Natasha became engaged to Michael, a Danish man. It developed that Michael was abusive, a situation that Natasha suffered in silence until she caught him sexually assaulting Katerina. Natasha was arrested and charged with attempted murder, with Katerina being kept at a children’s camp near the prison. All seems well until one day Natasha is transported to the Danish police headquarters for questioning. When she sees two Ukrainian policemen apparently waiting for her, Natasha makes a daring escape. Shortly after, Michael is found tortured and murdered.
Described as Nordic crime fiction, this is the best thriller series I've read in ages. This book is the third one I've read after The Boy in the Suitcase (Nina Borg #1) and Invisible Murder (Nina Borg #2). Quickly hooked, I could not put it down as I was re-introduced to Nina Borg, a Red Cross nurse who works in a camp for refugees. Nina is a middle-aged mother of two and recently divorced from her long suffering husband who finds her behavior often inexplicable and finally had enough of her. She has a history of rushing off to "save" people and in this case it's no different -- this time she's protecting Katarina (Rina), the eight-year-old daughter of Natasha Doroshenko - a women who had fled to Copenhagen and is an illegal from the Ukraine and who finds that things have not improved much for her. Natasha is jailed after attempting to murder her abusive fiance, Michael, and escapes custody on her way to police headquarters. This is when things really get interesting! Natasha is desperate to be reunited with her daughter, but there are other people now looking for them both. Who are they, and what do they want? Now Michael is dead and Natasha is accused of the crime. And, as Nina finds out, this may not be the first time Natasha has murdered someone...
Along with this storyline, the reader is exposed to another that is set in the Ukraine during the early years of the Stalinist regime (Soviet Republic) in 1934.
