I'm currently on the 3rd chapter. If the rest of the book gets better, I'll update my review, but right now things are pretty bad.
The book reads as though it was written by someone that either 1) Does not actually understand the material, is just copying and putting together information from other books into this one, and thus cannot explain the material because he doesn't truly understand it himself or 2) Understands the material, but is just horrible at explaining any of it.
Most things in the books are not explained very well, everything is just stated more as a matter of fact. So it's almost impossible to learn from. For example, there will be a graph showing a curve that increases, and the book will say "see how that y-value increases as x increases? Well there you have it, that explains everything." But the author is seemingly not able to clearly explain why we are observing that behavior in the first place.
I read Lange-Cardiovascular physiology, and that book was a gem. That let me to try this book in that series, but whereas that book was a 5/5, I would say sadly that this book is more of a 2/5 as of now.

Dr. Levitzky's book remains the best pulmonary physiology book on the market. Explanations are clear, illustrations and graphics explained well, calculations are demonstrated and clinical relevance is explained throughout the text. Dr. L provides "clinical problems" at the end of each chapter; these items that require critical thinking, analysis, or calculation. Answers and explanations are provided. Additionally, there are "clinical correlation" boxes in many chapters that present cases relevant to the chapter content so that the physiologic principles can be applied to the pathophysiology.
I am really happy that it is now available electronically.
